This fall Pininfarina will stop the production of the Alfa Romeo Spider and Brera models. The coupe and the convertible will not have a successor replacing them in the Italian’s line-up.

The Alfa Romeo fans will have to say goodbye staring this fall to the models that impressed them for five years, by their special design. We are talking about Alfa Romeo Spider and Alfa Romeo Brera, the convertible and the coupe built at the Pininfarina plant in Grugliasco.

After Pininfarina will stop the production of the two Italian models, the designer will also stop the assembly of the Ford Focus CC convertible. In this conditions, the Italian designer will have to move his plant in Grugliasco on the reserves bench, all the assembly lines and the other facilities of the production unit will pass to Gian Mario Rossignolo, the new owner of the De Tomaso brand.

Returning to the two models that Alfa Romeo will drop starting this fall, we have to say that the Fiat subsidiary has no plans in developing successors for Berra or Spider.

Even so, Alfa Romeo Brera and Spider will remain two of the Italian cars that touched the hearts of the Alfa brand fans.

Alfa Romeo Giulietta donates its 1,750 cc TBi engine brothers Brera and Spider. The unit will however provide only 200 HP on the sporty models and not 235 HP as on Giulietta.

The success enjoyed by the new 1750 cc TBi engine led the people at Alfa Romeo extend its use within the range. So, after Giulietta, the athletes Brera and Spider have under the hood the new petrol unit. Unfortunately for some the TBi engine was “downgraded”, being able to deliver just 200 hp and not 235, such as the Giulietta offers.

The direct injection and valve variable control unit provides for current Brera and Spider, 320 Nm of torque available very early, at only 1,400 revs. Those 200 horses are enough to propel the Italian models from 0-100 km / h in 7.7 and 7.8 seconds, the slower being the version with retractable roof. Performances have in terms of emissions, 189 g/km for Alfa Brera and 192 g/km for Spider.

The petrol unit will be accompanied by a diesel version for the two cars. It’s the 2.0-liter JTDM engine and 170 HP, also introduced last year on the Alfa Romeo 159 sedan. Able to deliver 360 Nm at 1,750 rpms, the diesel engine ca propel Brera and Spider 100 km/h in 8.8 and 9 seconds. CO2 emissions are also quite low, officials announced only 142 g/km.

The two engines are accompanied in Brera and Spider range by new aesthetic package, which includes a matte black finish of the body, 18 inch alloy wheels, painted in the same color, red calipers and a reservoir cap similar to that of 8C Competizione.

Inside, customers will be pampered with leather steering wheel and red seat seams, carbon fiber insertions, pedals dressed in aluminum and a multimedia system that combines audio functions with the air conditioning.
