Ever since 1948, the English brand of legend Range Rover has kept true to it’s word and has delivered only quality off-road, SUV or just ” luxury big cars” solutions to the world. After Ford purchased Land Rover from BMW in 2000, the brand added the supremely capable LR4 and Range Rover Sport to a struggling lineup. The Sport traces its looks and name to the top-end Range Rover model, but its underpinnings are actually based on the LR4, with an integrated bodyframe semi-monocoque construction for a combination of rough and ready off-roading and good noise isolation characteristics.

Upgraded and freshened up to stand proud against competitors such as the Porsche Cayenne and BMW’s X5/X6 M twins, the new 2010 Range Rover Sport, with the extraordinary Jaguar-derived supercharged 5.0-liter V8.

If the exterior shows no major overhauls, only LED lights in both the rear and front of the car and some more refined lines, the interior is another story. The Brits put their heads together to make sure no one can smirk at this new Sport-line player in the Range Rover team when they jump in (or up) in the car. The familiar cockpit interior is still here, but with high-quality leather all over as well as matte finish woods where lots of friction takes place. Eelectronic-controlled seats are also mounted. Reviewers negatively commented on the rather narrow navigation display, the multiple buttons than can be a little confusing, as well as the fact that the DVD-player attached to the back LCD displays is kind of hidden in a tiny access panel.

The supercharged 5.0-liter engine pumps out 510 horsepower and 461 pound-feet of thrust, wich makes this one a damn fast SUV. and Rover claims a 0-60 mph time of 5.9 seconds, and after one stab at the throttle, we can attest to the accuracy of that time. The Eaton-sourced twin-vortex supercharger is 16 percent more efficient than the booster it replaces, giving the RR Sport another 135 hp. The new engines figure to be more reliable, too, and they carry 15,000-mile service intervals, effectively doubling the amount of regal mud bogging between dealer visits. Land Rover went to ZF for its newest transmission, and the HP28 six-speed unit is a very smooth operator. Paddle-shifters were on-hand, but we had no desire to use them more than once thanks to the engine’s surplus of torque.

Regarding efficiency, Land Rover says that the 2010 Sport is more economical than the model it replaces, which was quite a guzzler indeed. That’s 17 mpg on the highway and 12 mpg in the city EPA.

A fine SUV of this testing year 2010, so thanks you dear “bastards” at Range Rover for a classical-looking option to all those trendy jokes out there. Sure the price isn’t exactly low, the super completely loaded Range Rover Sport carries a MSRP of $82,345, but an entry-level model may be quite a deal at a local dealer – hold the line for that.
