The most difficult rally in the world is hosted for the third time by Argentina and Chile. Sainz, De Villiers and Al-Attiyah are the three Volkswagen drivers with chances to win.

After the 2008 edition of Dakar Rally, which was celebrating 30 years since the start of the first edition, was canceled it was moved from Africa to South America. Now they passed from the adventures between the dunes of Sahara Desert to the adventures between the dunes of Atacama desert and crossing the Andes. Argentina and Chile are hosting the adventure that starts from Buenos Aires on January 1, then it stops for two days in Arica (Chile) on the shore of Pacific for returning in the capital city of Argentina on January 15.

About 10,000 km are scheduled for the 2011 of Rally Dakar, the route making the competitors running at high speeds even at an altitude of over 2,500 m. They will end up further North than in previous editions, the Dakar 2011′s route being very close to the Bolivia and Peru border.

For Dakar 2011 the gasoline-powered cars can increase the diameter of the air intakes to 34 mm. More than this, the teams that use gasoline engines can now use six gears transmissions, compared to the teams that use diesel engines which have to equip their cars with five-gears transmissions. These new regulations need to balance the fight between the cars with gasoline engines and the ones with diesel units.

Compared with the classic rallies, in rally-raid the co-driver has a more important role, given that he needs to dictate for hundreds of kilometers every day. For several years the officials are making changes o reduce the influence of GPS, highlighting the use of road-book. In 2011, the big new thing is that the distance to use the GPS to help you get to the check points (WPM) was reduced. If years ago this distance was of three km, in Dakar 2011 the GPS will show you the direction only 400 m before.

This year, the factory drivers and some other drivers that ended the last two Dakar editions in the first 20th will use in 2011 450 cmc bikes. KTM, the manufacturer that won the last nine editions of Dakar Rally, have developed because of this rule a new bike. Now the Austrians, and more precisely the two official drivers, Marc Coma and Cyril Despres will have to fight for victory against five more bike manufacturers. Besides KTM, at Dakar 2011 Aprilia, Sherco, BMW, Husqvarna and Yamaha will take the start.

VW developed for this edition of Dakar 2011 a new Race Touareg and has three drivers that can win the South American rally. Sainz, the former WRC champion won the rally in 2010, while his South African team-mate won in 2009. Al-Attiyah finished second in 2010 and the Quatar driver is able to finish first at then end of 8,000 km of special stages.

Anyway, there are not few saying that in 2011, just like in 2010 we will see a VW podium. Peterhansel, with his BMW X-Raid can also climb on the podium, while Cuerlain Chicherit and Juan Nani Roma might fight for the fifth place, who, a month before Dakar 2011, was offered a deal to drive a Nissan Navara for Team Overdrive.

Believe it or not, but in Korea, the first official display of Hyundai Equus was made in the presence of the rivals Mercedes S-Class and Lexus LS! Are the Koreans too pushy?

The first launch of the new flag ship, Hyundai Equus had their car facing Mercedes S-Class and Lexus LS, the Korean automaker stating his ambitions to rival the best of premium brands. It’s up to you to decide if Hyundai wants too much or not.

We can see from the first pictures of Hyundai Euquus that the Korean luxury car looks a lot like Mercedes S-Class. But it seems that Mercedes seen that too and… liked it, Hiring the designer that handled the Equus project, Joel Piaskowski, to work for their design department in California. Odd, huh?

Coming back to Hyundai Equus, the model had Korean its debut last year and featured the first 8-gears transmission build by Hyundai. Technically speaking, we are talking a bout a luxury car with the same kind of engines as its rivals. Hyundai Equus comes with two wheelbase versions: the short version is 5.16 meters long and features a 3.8-liter V6 engine of 290 HP, but also a 4.6-liter V8 engine of 375 HP; the long wheelbase version benefits from the same V6 engine, but the V8 is of 5.0-liter and develops 400 HP.

Of course, new we can talk about a lot of similarities with Mercedes S-Class and even with their Hyundai Genesis, but as a whole Hyundai Equus can fight any time with a BMW 7-Series, as the new generation is not what we expected.

Fortunately for the Bavarian model, is not selling in Europe. Among the novelties brought by Equus, we are talking about LED taillights plus some safety gadgets, like the PRE-Safe seat belts like the ones of Mercedes.

I don’t know what others feel, but when I think about the golden era of the games developed 10-15 years ago, I wish that some of them stayed the same. It’s true, back then there weren’t so many games shouting out lout from the shop shelves “buy me, buy me”; but almost every new arrival was offering the maximum for that times: a fine developed single-player gameplay and multiplayer with all the the existing features: LAN, online and even split screen for some of the productions. But what do we have now? A superficial single-player and online-only multiplayer for that the developers to somehow defend against piracy and the publishers to win some extra cash with DLCs. A lot of DLCs.

The new Need for Speed Hot Pursuit is a product of the generation it belongs to, with all the defects, only some of the qualities of the generation, some of them borrowed from its successors. But if in single-player the pluses are very well highlighted, when going online you can figure out that the 10 years old NFS Hot Pursuit had a lot more to offer. Still, the experience of the new NFS Hot Pursuit is a reminiscent of the races we used to love, especially the racer feeling (outside the law), and combined with the speed feeling offered by the modern supercars, the damage elements borrowed from Burnout and the tactical usage of the gadgets, will find you at 5 AM wanting to race one more time just to be the first on SpeedWall.

Rewards for wanted drivers

Hot Pursuit is the first NFS in the modern era with absolutely no story, so we are leaving behind the underground races or the challenges set by SMS, but also the sexy girls; good-bye free roam, there are only some tracks in a fictional background in Seacrest County. The idea of racers vs police is starting from the premise that the authorities in Seacrest, aware that they can’t handle the invasion of “tourists” with hundreds of horsepower, own some insane police cars: Koenigsegg CCX, Lamborghini Reventon and Pagani Zonda.

The Career mode is split in two: as an adrenaline-addicted driver or as policeman. Personally, I enjoyed the first one, the dark side of the Force being more attractive; still, I couldn’t ignore the policeman career, because I look good in uniform and I just love to request helicopter support when I need one. There are some gameplay differences between the two career modes, not big, but strong enough: for example, the time trial races resume to this: beat the predefined time, but for the policeman career, any time you hit the walls, trees or any other traffic collisions brings you at least 2 seconds penalty.

For the drivers racing outside the law, there are five types of races, mixed on the circuits with various weather conditions: sun, snow, rain, during the day or the night. Summing up:

• Preview: usually a time trial race in a supercar still unlocked just to have you drooling and after that, to see how it handles after you raise your jaw from the ground. One of the first cars is McLaren F1, in a race against time, an infernal one I would say. Anyway I am curious: has someone managed to end the race under 3:08 minutes from the first attempt?
• Gauntlet: race against time too, but also with the police blowing in your neck, busy trowing spike stripes and push you in the walls, very often using the Nitro.
• Duel: heads up races where the only thing that matters is who finishes first; the second place also being rewarded with Bounty, but considerably less than for the 1st place.
• Race: the classic races, where the number of opponents raises in the same time with the number of unlocked classes and cars, from 4 to 8; every competitor can hit his opponent freely, in the same time being careful not to ruin their car.
• Hot Pursuit: it’s a combination between Race and Gauntlet, where the goal is the overtake your opponents and avoid the police.
• Interceptor: player versus police, where you have to use all your weapons plus your driving skills to get rid of the law’s horse power.

For the cops we have almost the same types of races:

• Interceptor: the siren version of the Racer mode, this time the policeman being the one to use all the gadgets in order to catch the reckless driver.
• Preview: see above.
• Hot Pursuit: the police version where you have to arrest as many drivers as possible (preferably all of them)
• Rapid Response: you have to get to an incident as soon as possible, of course against time, and any collision is penalized.

After I tested all these types of races, I reached at two conclusions: one, the police was thought to be more powerful than the racers for adding some tactics together with appropriate moments to use your gadgets; two, when you are the cop, you have some real head aches, especially in the races where penalties are added, because the cars behave differently and you can’t drive the Zonda in the same manner you were driving the Ford in the begging.

For the beginners or the ones that rarely play this type of games, the AI might look too aggressive especially after unlocking the Hyper class (including powerful supercars, like Koenigsegg or McLaren). On the other hand, the perfectionists will do their best to get as much Bounty as possible and gold medals, especially that they can boast about their achievements.

As well, when you are on the police’s side you might get bored fast by the penalties and the suspects driving with weirdly-high speeds, even with Nitro and/or Turbo on. Also, because the races are a bit tougher, it will be tougher to unlock to cars, and the experience will come very hard. Still, Need For Speed Hot Pursuit has its way to motivate you and I can say that, although I got very angry during some of the races, I haven’t abandoned the fight.

Audi have unveiled the photo gallery of the 2012 Audi A6 and the first official information about the model. The new Audi A6 will have its world premiere in January, at Detroit Auto Show.

Audi have completely redesigned their mid-size luxury sedan, also developing a hybrid version of it. The new A6 can boast about a lighter ASF body, a sports chassis and a wide range of electric systems for the driver. Besides the new features of 2012 Audi A6, the hybrid drive train promises the efficiency of an in-line four and the power of a V6 engine. The design of the 2012 A6 have chanced compared to the previous generation, but the modifications were not socking in any way for the Audi fans.

The new 2012 Audi A6 is 4.92 meters long and 1.87 meters wide. In order to get a sporty look, the hight of the model is of only 1.46 meters, giving the A6, as ones that designed it say, “sporty proportions that are unrivaled by the competition.” The LED headlights come as optional, but the long hood, the wide fenders and the skewed roof come as stock. For the interior, everything goes around the two front occupants. The dashboard is facing the driver, but the right side of it surrounds the passenger. Actually, the dashboard and the door panels makes you feel like they are “hugging” you if you stay on the front seats.

The New 2012 Audi A6 comes with five engines. Two of them are petrol engines, and three are TDI engines. The engines offered with the A6 develop between 177 and 300 HP and uses technologies like the start-stop system, the KERS system (Kinetic Energy Recovery System) and the thermal management system. Compared with the engine line-up of the previous generation, Audi promises a 19% drop in fuel consumption, and the 2012 Audi A6 promises to be the most efficient model in its segment.

The most fuel efficient version in the range is the 2012 Audi A6 2.0 TDI matted with a manual gearbox. The 2.0-liter diesel engine scored 48 mpg in the fuel efficiency tests and really low CO2 emissions for a diesel. Even so, the resources allow the 2012 Audi A6 2.0 TDI to sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 8.7 seconds and hit a top speed of 142 mph. The 2012 Audi A6 Hybrid will deliver a total of 245 HP and is equipped with a 2.0-liter TFSI engine promising 38 mpg. Regarding the gearboxes, Audi offers both automatic and manual Multitronic CVT transmissions and double-clutch S-Tronic ones. Every gearbox is calibrated especially for the New A6, offering optimum gear-ratios, say Audi officials.

At last, Audi launched the most power version of the A3 range: 2011 Audi RS3. The interesting fact is that the 5-door version gets it first.

Rumors about Audi RS3 2011 hit the web while ago and even the launch date was speculated around every big auto show of the last two years. Still, Audi have delayed the surprise as much as they could.

Even some spy shots of the Audi RS3 were taken in Ingolstadt, but there were some question marks around them, mainly because the 5-door body. But, the New Audi RS3 was not unveiled as a 3-door hot-hatch, as everyone expected, but as a day-by-day car, in the RS3 Sportback version.

Just like the other models wearing the “RS” logo, 2011 Audi RS3 Sportback does not surprise with an extravagant look, although the intakes in the bumpers make it different from the other cars of the line-up. Otherwise, the aesthetic details resume to the hex front grid, having the RS logo, a new set of side skirts, a decent rear diffuser in the bumper and a pair of new exhausts.

Audi RS3 2011 comes with CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic) accessories, both for the spoilers and for the side mirrors or the spoiler. The look is completed by the 19 inch rims, with five spokes finished in titanium, giving the car a dynamic look when 2011 RS3 is moving.

The performances of the car are also at a good level, thanks to the turbocharged engine borrowed from the Audi TT RS bomb. We are talking about the five-cylinder engine, developing a maximum power of 340 HP but also an impressive 332 lb-ft of torque, available between 1,600 and 5,300 rpm.

Therefore, Audi RS3 2011 sprints from 0 to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds, while the top speed is limited to 155 mph. The fuel efficiency will not scare the environmental enthusiasts as Audi RS3 scores 26 mpg, and pretty low CO2 emissions. Fair values for the  performances of the engine.

Of course, the Quattro four-wheel drive system we love is not missing, while the transmission is the automatic S-Tronic, with 7 gears and double-clutch. The gearbox can also be controlled from the paddles on the steering wheel, having two automatic modes.

For Audi RS3 Sportback 2011 to have a sporty behavior, the ride hight was lowered 1 inch, and the brake disks have 14.5 inches in the front and 12.2 inches in the rear. New RS3 Sportback features wide tyres, 235/35 R 19 in front and 225/35 R 19 in the rear. The ESP system also has the Sport mode, but it can also be turned off if you want to feel the thrill.

If the exterior of RS3 Sportback is not so aggressive compared to a stock A3, the interior it’s a lot more sporty than the cockpit of a regular A3. First of all, the sports seats stand out, dressed in black Nappa leather, matched with the red stitching. Worth mentioning is the piano-black finishing of the back side of the front seats.

The interior of 2011 Audi RS Sportback is dominated by black, red stitches, but also by the red lights offering the car a sporty look. The steering wheel as a racing design, with a blunt bottom, also with audio and cruise-control. Otherwise the ambiance is dominated by the RS3 logos.

The new model will be built in the Hungarian factory in Gyor, and the starting price in Germany for 2011 Audi RS3 is of  49,900 euros (around $66,500).

Mercedes presented today, at the Californian auto show, the performance version of their CLS model. Equipped with the new V8 engine coming from AMG, the new Mercedes CLS63 is available in two power versions.

After the Biome concept, unveiled yesterday, Mercedes released today the first informations and pictures of the new CLS63 AMG, the newest product of their performance division. The four-door coupe gets a series of aerodynamic modifications and under its hood was fitted the M157 twin-turbo 5.5-liter V8 engine, which promises AMG-worthy performances.

In order to be able to face the automotive industry’s big names, Mercedes CLS63 AMG comes with the new 5.5-liter V8 engine offered by AMG in two power versions. The first one delivers 518 HP and 515 lb-ft of torque, resources guaranteeing a 0 to 60 sprint in just 4.4 seconds and a top speed, electronically limited to 155 mph.

For the ones dreaming of even more power, the Stuttgart automaker made their dreams come true with the Performance Package, which delivers a total of 550 Hp and 590 lb-ft of torque coming from under the hood. The acceleration from 0 to 60 mph is done in 4.3 seconds and the top speed is of 185 mph, also electronically limited.

Although the performances of the four-door coupe have improved, compared to the previous generation, Mercedes also managed to reduce the fuel consumption values with 33%.

The V8 engine is assisted by a Speedshift MCT 7 transmission, with seven gears, coming with a start-stop system, available in the C drive mode (Controlled Efficiency). When the gearbox is set for the Sport (S) or Sport Plus (S+) model, the fuel saving system turns of, to increase the driving pleasure. Of course, the Speedshift transmission also features the M mode, allowing the driver to shift gears manually, with the help of the paddles behind the steering wheel.

To maximize the sensations offered by the V8 engine, Mercedes have installed a starting assist system, named RACE START. The technological package includes an adaptive suspension with three functions, Confort, Sport and Sport Plus, combined with the newest sports power steering designed in the AMG labs. As well, the driver can choose from three levels of the ESP system.

The new Mercedes CLS63 AMG features four drilled 14.1 inch brake disks, hid behind some 19 inch alloy wheels, with five spokes, wearing 255/35 tyres in the front and 285/30 in the rear. The contrast is offered by the red brake calipers.

Aesthetically, Mercedes CLS63 AMG comes with a revised aerodynamic package, including a new front bumper, with bigger air intakes, new side skirts and a rear diffuser flanked by four exhausts.

The market debut will bring the CLS63 AMG Launch Edition, with a body painted in Manganit Grey Magnom, Corteccia Pearl leather for the interior, combined with anthracite alcantara.  The finishes are made of carbon fiber and black wood.

Ford has managed to stay on top in these past grey years, and it is has a lot to do with the great steering CEO Alan Mulally has been displaying in the past 4 years or so. Among his clearly stated strategies, from the get-go, was the addition of new products and perfecting of current models, complemented with the disposal of unproductive sub-brands or even major models that do not appeal the public anymore.

And with 2008 and 2009 the moves started to pay off, the 2010 Taurus was one of the best selling cars in it’s range in North America, the 2010 Fusion was a huge success too ( MotorTrend named it car of the year, read about it here). A recent study also shows people are spending a lot of money on little Fiestas, few of them settling for the standard trim at purchase.

And here is the Ford Edge 2011 Limited, the mid-size crossover that sold in excess of 130k units in one year on the market.

What has Ford brought new to the five-seater?

They focused on the interior cabin, as the exterior already proved a formula for success. There’s lots of room by any standard, the new Ford Edge 2011 has the same two-row interior architecture and offers  32.2 cubic feet of cargo space in back, and if you fold down the back seats you suddenly have the impressive capacity of 68.9 cubic feet to spare.

Tactile-orientated finishes have been used all around the front panel, bolstered leather seats are included for those bumpy roads you’ll be roaming in the Edge 2011 Limited. Ford took extra care in redesigning the steering wheel, which is now thicker and covered in leather on all Edge Limited models. Other tech goodies include the keyless start button, BLIS blind spot detection and a rear-view camera, adaptive cruise control and a collisions warning system that surely boosted Ford’s safety points on the new Edge.

The 2011 Edge can also be fitted with Ford’s popular SYNC system and the new MyFord Touch interface which includes a pair of 4.2-inch LCD screens on either side of the large analog speedometer and a totally new take on how people interact with the stereo, hands-free phone, navigation and climate controls.  The cabin also boasts with a new firewall and acoustic windshield, for a more relaxing drive safe from the roar of the engine.

Speaking of engine, the Ford Edge 2011 Limited is powered by a newly upgraded 3.5-liter V6 engine, which  now produces 285 horsepower and 253 pound-feet of torque thanks to the addition of twin-independent variable-cam timing. Your Limited 2011 Edge will be roaring at 20 hp and three lb-ft torque more than it’s predecessor,  and with a car this big you can feel the extra vigour. With a steady foot and need skill, some drivers took the Ford Edge 2011 Limited to the 60 mph in only 7.1 seconds.

The six-speed automatic is now smoother, and mileage has dropped to Edge are 19 miles per gallon in the city and 27 mpg on the highway.

The last-generation Edge made do with only one available engine, but the new 2011 model offers three engine choices. Beyond the base 3.5-liter V6, the top-shelf Sport model gets a larger 3.7-liter V6 producing 305 hp and 280 lb-ft. The two V6s will also soon be joined by a third, more efficient engine: a 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder boasting an estimated 230 hp and 15-percent better fuel economy than the 3.5-liter V6.

While the regular model is now priced at $27,220, a Limited model like the one featured in the photo gallery requires spending  at least $34,220. But it’s worth every penny, with the incredible interior design, fresh look that is virtually ages, upgraded engine that gives more than enough… edge and efficient consumption. We’ll surely be hearing more about the Edge model, be it the Limited 2011 model or future refreshers. Stay tuned.

Range Rover introduced their new model Evoque , which will debut at the Paris Motor Show by the end of this month.

Today’s Range Rover presented his own version of LRX.  The model is lighter than his brother Land Rover, has a more aggressive design and deliver fewer grams of CO2 per mile. According to first information, the model is equipped with a 2.0-liter gasoline engine, supercharged with a turbine and provide 240 HP, which they put it on the road with an automatic transmission with six reports. The suspension of this model is self-adaptive  and use MagneRide system, while the electric direction is standard, and customers, can receive a kinetic energy recovery system lost in braking.

Range Rover Evoque comes with three exterior design themes. They’re called Pure, Prestige and Dynamic. Pure version is a minimalist approach to  Evoque design, and use 

 natural colors and ornaments of polished metal. Prestige version benefits from a particular interior and exterior receives a set of 19 inch alloy wheels. Evoque Dynamic is for customers who want a body kit and a set of redesigned  19 or 20 inches alloy wheels, with a more sporty interior design.

“Range Rover is the luxury, Land Rover is versatility and practicality. Evoque helped us to define our brand and establish how it is positioned. That says a lot about where the Range Rover can go in the future. In terms of historical,  Land Rover is known for developing new market segments, or at least change the direction of Land Rover models. Think of the first Range Rover, the Range Rover Sport or Freelandar. We are optimistic that they will do the same thing with Evoque.” said Phil Propham, head of Land Rover.

Range Rover Evoque public debut, will take place at the Paris Motor Show this month, and sales of the model will begin in 2011 autumn. Relative to Range Rover Sport models, Evoque is 17 inches shorter, 7 inches shorter.  Width of the model appears to be close to that of Range Rover Sport and the terrain capabilities appear to be part of his  Evoque CV.

We’ll tell you from the get go that we’re not so sure about the naughty part, but the new Volvo S60 does have some interesting features, making it probably the must-have Volvo sedan of the moment. What did indeed stand out as rather naughty naughty was the promotional campaign the once-Swedish maker wrapped the new S60 in, starting from the name of the buzz (“Naughtiest Volvo Ever”),  going through the ads and all, and up to the new ownership (China’s Zhejiang Geely Holding Group) and CEO Stefan Jacoby, a man that showed some guts while on the steering wheel of America’s Volkswagen.

Still, let’s not rush and say that the S60 2011 is not an interesting car. Pausing an year on the design, and jumping from the 2009 to the 2011 model gave Volvo a chance to redo the nose of the car, adorning it with killer headlights, a bigger grille with the Volvo logo centred. These are of course LED lit, both heads and tails.

The rear of the car almost makes it look like a hatch from a distance, and we simply love the doubled side line that gives the S60 2011 a flowing spirit when in movement. The S60′s wheelbase has been increased with 2.1 inches on the new model, offering more legroom.

Conservative, but fresh and edgy. That’s how the 2011 model’s look can be summarized. The pictures speak volumes, like always when it comes to design.

The S60 2011 will be launched in all-wheel T6 trim, plus tons of modern equipotential fitted like Volvo’s ‘Corner traction control by torque vectoring’ system, the appraised six-speed Geartronic box, 7inch display with (thank the heavens!) standard know-controller, sport seats, the City Safety vehicle-avoidance hardware that the XC60 trended ,Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto Brake, a lane departure safety mechanism, 180-degree front-end blind spot cameras and, of course, adaptive cruise control.

Oh, we almost forgot: the fantastic Volvo “Safe&Sound” guarantee, that spawns for 5 years and 60,000 miles. The only thing it doesn’t cover are tires.

Naughty? Maybe not, but appealing nevertheless. Let’s take a quick glance at the powerhouse of the Volvo S60 2011 too.  The proven and tested 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder is turbocharged to 300 hp at 5,600 rpm and a decent 325 pound-feet of torque from 2,100-4,200 rpm on regular unleaded gas. The engine is also inter-cooled with the latest technology available, and all the thrust is matted with a sport model automatic gearbox with +/-  gate for connoisseurs. Due to reinforced steel tubes and other tweaks, steering is supposed to be 10% faster and more precise. Volvo estimates a 0-60 mph acc time of 5.8 seconds, with top speed for the new S60 at 130 mph. Not the fastest car around, but satisfactory for a 3,900-pound vehicle.

“The Naughtiest Volvo ever” features all Volvo stood for these past decades: safety first and sport spirit with all the commodities that can be squeezed in along. The new four-door beauty can be yours for some $38,550 ($37,700 MSRP plus $850 destination), which is a decent price for the moment.  Italian automaker said the new model is a response to customer requests which wanted a GranTurismo for  road that could serve also on the circuit. The model will be accompanied by a course of handling and aerodynamics held by Maserati Racing division.

Masserati GranTurismo MC Stradale Ready For Paris

 Maserati GranTurismo MC Stradale receives an extra 11 HP compared to the GranTurismo S, thus reaching a total of 444 HP. GranTurismo MC Stradale receive the same V8 4.7-liter engine and is able to break the barrier of 186 mph.  Although not officially announced, it seems that the new MC Stradale will be able to sprint  from 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds.

The new Maserati will benefit from some cosmetic updates, such as a more pronounced grille, a larger rear spoiler and new side skirts.  Moreover, the Maserati GranTurismo MC Stradale benefit of cast aluminum wheels.
