Although GM has received several last-minute offers  to save Saab, the Americans decided to send the Swedish brand in liquidation.

The Swedish automaker maker Saab has been put into liquidation today, despite the last-minute offers that General Motors received for the Northern manufacturer. The information was made public by the Saab’s main workers union.

“Today, Saab Automobile’s board has decided on the liquidation of the company. GM is taking an additional step in the winding up of Saab,” said Stefan Loefven, head of the IF Metall union, which has a syndic in that the Swedish automaker’s board.

Swedes harshly criticize GM’s attitude, which had confirmed today that they received several offers to sale Saab. “It is irresponsible of GM as an owner to go in two directions, both pursuing the sale (of Saab) and the winding up,” Loefven said, quoted by AFP.

Among the parties interested in Saab take over there were Dutch supercar maker Spyker and a Luxembourgish investment group company and F1 boss, Bernie Ecclestone. GM spokesman announced Friday that GM continues in parallel both the liquidation process of the brand, and the analysis of the offers the company receives. However, GM has hired AlixPartners company to oversee and manage the operations for the disposal of the Swedish brand.

Saab employs 3,400 people in Sweden, but the closing of the brand would mean the elimination of 8,000 jobs in the Northern country, involving here the suppliers’ workers whose work is directly and exclusively related to Saab. This is the fourth brand the Americans give away since 2005, but the first one for whom the closing was preferred in front of selling.

i setinaly would hand it to GM they are by far the worst car makers in the world, never trusted GM with SAAB it’s too complicated for them…
and they should accept one of the deals taken from skyper and keonigsegg but mostly keonigsegg which would be more preffered as car makers to take control of the lovley SAAB and show GM how it’s done…

Thank you to all saab biders for keeping hope and faith, and blieveing that the swedish SAAB cars (not GM SAAB) where in one word OUTSTANDING
and it should continue doing that Till Everyone on Earth is Dead, my first car was saab when i was 17, now am 24 and i drove SAAB 900, 9000, 9000cd, 93 1998, 93 2001, 95 vector 2003 and ofcorse GM SAAB 2005 93. which was defently the worst saab of them all and fuck you GM for doing that … high five for swedish car makers… when i saw the first 95 especially the 95 vector wich i drove i was speachless fantastic work swedes, in my eyes you the best thank you for all this lovley SAAB years i would one day wish it would come back to you guys again and continue to amaze us with your SAAB’s

as a person i dont see SAAB as only a car, it’s part of me now if it feels like it part of our family and i thank you swedes for doing that……

  • Some who has been driving for 7 years, had 7 cars? Wow, and I thought that my 5 cars in 20 years was a lot.

Sorry, you didn’t drive any of them long enough to truly learn the quirks or problems of any of them. Drive a single car for 10 years, then get back with us.

  • It is such a loss to lose Saab, yes they are quirky but so it seems is the segment of the population that drives them. Our 9.3 turbo is an outstanding vehicle for safety, economy and power It is faster that my bmw 0-100km and gets from 5.3 to 6.9 liters for 100 km depending on how you choose to drive. The engineering is likely beyond the sloppy work of most gm manufacturing so it is not surprising that they seem to want to destroy it, I wonder where they will get their innovation for there brands now? In part it is like the Canadian Avero Arrow that was years ahead of it’s time, that industry was washed away to other companies in a short sighted move by government.
I feel for the workers of Sweden who will likely lose their jobs as a result of this action and I have a concern that parts maybe very difficult to obtain it the future. I have other GM vehicles associated with my work but I will probably be changing that once the dust settles.

  • Please…..SAAB=Opel. There is nothing lost except jobs, which is always a pitty.

As a brand it is unbelievable that people believe it is still the brand that it was and that it stil is very different. It’s not. It is an Opel with a different badge. Just like the Lancia which is now presented as a Dodge at the autoshow. A Volvo is/was a Ford. Etc etc.

You overpay just for a sticker on the bonnet!!
