Checking the oil level in the clutch
While most drivers today prefer vehicles with automatic transmissions, some still drive cars and trucks with manual transmissions. Manual transmission vehicles use a cable to connect the transmission or clutch hydraulic system. It contains a small tank containing fluid to the system to work properly. If your vehicle has manual transmission with a hydraulic clutch, in this article you will find the steps you must meet in order to check the clutch fluid level.
Steps
1. Open the hood of the vehicle. The best time to do this is when the vehicle is on a level surface and the engine is cold.
2. Find the clutch fluid tank. In most vehicles with hydraulic clutch fluid tank is located near the brake cylinder in the back of the engine. It is smaller than the brake fluid tank. If you are unsure of where to look consult the vehicle owner’s manual.
3. Check the fluid level in the tank. Depending on the vehicle, the tank must be filled to the top or between the minimum and maximum lines that appear in the tank. In newer vehicles tank is made of clear plastic that makes it easier visibility. In older vehicles the tanks are made of metal which requires that you remove the cap on the tank to check fluid level.
4. Add liquid to the tank. Pour the liquid carefully into the tank and clean up any spills.
Hydraulic clutches use the same type of fluid the hydraulic brake system. Use the same fluid recommended by the Department of Transportation. You can find this recommendation in the vehicle owner’s manual.
5. Replace the tank lid and close the capo. Make sure everything closes properly.
Tips
It depends on how often the vehicle you need to check the fluid level in the tank of the clutch. Some vehicles require you to check the fluid level monthly. Others require that you check the fluid level only once a year.
Warnings
If every time you check the clutch fluid tank, you need to add fluid you may have a leak. Most clutch fluid tanks are so small that a leak can empty them. Leaks can occur near the clutch master cylinder, the second cylinder or behind the clutch pedal. Check immediately if you suspect a leak, since the lack of fluid that the vehicle makes it impossible to make changes and you can drive your vehicle.
