BMW presented Monday night, as a world premiere, the new BMW 5 Series Sedan generation. The new model is set to make its European debut in the first half of the next year. The vehicle has the longest wheelbase in his class, a long and slick hood and an elegant roof line, vaulted like one of a coupe. The design characteristics specific to the brand can be discovered in the front side of the car, like the double BMW grill, easily bended forward and on the hood carved to inspire more power, but also in the brawny rear of the automobile. In the interior, the new BMW 5 Series has modern functions and the dashboard looks like orientated towards the driver. The car will make his debut with an 8-cylinders engine and three 6-cylinders versions, all gas engines, as like two 6-cylinder diesel engines.

Engines and Technology

The advanced transmission and suspension technology ensure a high comfort level and sportiveness, in the same time, the optional Dynamic Driving Control system allows the driver to tune the suspension to suit his driving stile or the road conditions. The 2010 BMW 5 Series Sedan also features the Adaptive Drive, Dynamic Damper Control and Dynamic Drive Stability Control systems, as well the Integral Active Steering system.

Under the hood of the newest member of the Bavarian family is a 8-cylinder engine, and three 6-cylinder versions and two diesel engine versions with 6 cylinders. The list will be completed by a 4-inline turbodiesel engine with direct common-rail injection. The maximum power will be 184 HP, which makes the BMW 520d, standardly equipped with the Auto Start Stop function, to be the new mark in this class. The medium mileage for this new BMW is about 47 mpg, with CO2 emissions of 123 g/km (preliminary data).

The German automaker’s top model, the 550i, will be equipped with a 8-cylinder engine, having BMW’s TwinPower Turbo and High Precision Injection technology for a maximum power of 407 HP.

The 6-inline engine, with BMW TwinPower Turbo, High Precision Injection and VALVETRONIC, on the BWM 535i, will deliver 306 HP and the other two 6-cylinder versions, also equipped with High Precision Injection, grow 258 HP on the BMW 528i and 204 HP and the BMW 523i.

The 6-cylinder diesel engines provide 245 HP for the BMW 530d and for the BMW 525d a 204 HP level. Also, for lower CO2 emissions and to be more environmental friendly, the new BMW 5 Series will be also available with The BMW BluePerformance technology.

All the 2010 BMW 5 Series models can feature, optionally, the new automatic BMW eight-speed transmission. BMW 550i comes with an automatic transmission optimized for fuel efficiency. The EPS Electric Power Steering comes with all the standard models of the new BMW 5 Series

The BMW Efficient Dynamics technology, are included in the basic versions of every model, in adequate combinations for every model, including the Brake Energy Regeneration system, flaps active control and the smart cutting out of the auxiliary electric units, which includes an air conditioner compressor that can be stopped. The doors, the hood, the front and side panels and the components of the suspension are all fabricated of aluminium.

Driving assist systems

The driving assist systems include Parking Assistant, Surround View, collision warning, which activates the brakes, combined with an Active Cruise Control system and Stop&Go, but also the new Speed Limit Device. Other available characteristics are the Lane Change Warning, Lane Departure Warning, Speed Limit Info, Head-Up Display, BMW Night Vision that detects the pedestrians and a surveillance cam.

With the five generation of the model, the sales of the BMW 5 Series reached 5,5 million units. Now, the new model underpins the architecture that was presented in premiere as the BMW 7 Series.

The jointly production of the BMW 5 Series Sedan and BMW 7 Series at the BMW plant in Dingolfing, together with the intensive usage of the common components, results in a efficient production with high quality standards.
