Rumor: Subaru FT-86 Coupe Gets AWD?

Even though the presented picture of the Subaru FT-86 is just a rendering of what the Japanese coupe will look like, there are rumors surrounding the concept from the first time Toyota and Subaru announced their collaboration. Recent rumors say that the Subaru coupe is dubbed 216A, so we’ll call it so too.

After the Toyota FT-86 was revealed at the Tokyo Motor Show, we are now eager to see what Subaru is preparing for us. It seems that the previous whispers  saying that Subaru will drop their highly-rated AWD were just rumors. No, the Subaru is not preparing a RWD coupe.

I already love that scoop...

I already love that scoop...

Eve though it’s not official yet, the Subi coupe will be heavier than the Toyota FT-86, meaning that, somehow, the guys from Subaru will have to compensate this little penalty. And which is the easiest way? Adding some power to the engine. So, the 216A will feature one of the following engines: a 250 hp 2.0-liter or WRX STI’s 300 hp boxer.

We don’t know yet if only the Japanese market will get to enjoy the Subaru 216A or if it will be available for the North American market, but if it is do drop in the US, it will happen in 2011, after it’s introduction on the JDM in January 2011. Anyway it’s expected to be tagged around $30,000.
