Toyota FT-86 concept
Toyota is going to display a new car at the up-coming Tokyo Auto Show, and no it is now some SUV attempt. This bullet-shaped concept you can see above is the FT-86, partially inspired by the Corolla-based AE86 sports coupe. It seems that the car was designed in France, and it bears a remarkable resemblance to the FT-HS concept shown at the Detroit Auto Show several years back.
At this point was only know that the car will be powered by a Subaru-derived 2.0-liter boxer four, and power target are rear wheels. At 163.78 inches long and 69.29 inches wide, with a wheelbase of 101.18 inches, this is a smaller car than it looks.
Probably meant to fill in for the Toyota FT-SH, just like that one filled in for the Supra, this rather not-so- interesting concept. What we are eager to know is if this concept will feature that unique retractable roof similar to a targa top that the FT-SH had. That might explain the folding back seats.
To be priced around euro 20.000, plus taxes needless to add, the Toyota FT-86 will surely be featured again after or close to the Tokyo Motor Show. Like Toyota president Akio Toyoda hopes, this might be the offensive Toyota needs to boost interest in these demanding times.

Glad to see a rear wheel drive from Toyota. I own an AE86 myself and it is a blast to drive. The engine in this new model should be a Honda Killer.
Indeed Honda is up to serious competition. And once it starts production be sure you’ll find a hint or two here.
The pad on the door sill is a stroke of genius! Finally a place to put your hand when extracting yourself from those super low slung seats. I mean really, the only people who can afford these things are so old they can barely walk, much less fold themselves origami style to get in and out. Bravate!
PS – the shark fin knee bolster also shows forethought.
Well, give it to the Japs..
Thank you for the comment.
