Audi R8 e-tron, Electric Supercar Live At Le Mans
After a long series of static, pedestal (if you will) public displays and teasing, Audi finally decided to demonstrate live and on the track the electric R8 supercar, dubbed R8 e-tron. We’re glad that Audi took the R8 e-tron for a spin in France, it seems the electric supercar is managing the track quite well indeed, let’s hope this is a step towards putting the car into production.
At the Le Mans 24h race last weekend, spectators got to see racing legend Frank Biela piloting the electric R8 around the famous French circuit. This was sheer delight. We’ll get back to you once we have a video of this display of pure electric power, Audi style. More photos of the Audi R8 e-tron after a few paragraphs.
The car’s lithium-ion battery can be charged from a household plug socket (230 volts/16 amperes), taking six to eight hours to be refilled. Kinetic energy from braking is also saved and an alternator converts it to electric energy to be reused by the engine.
Coupled with the Detroit Audi e-tron Concept’s low gross weight of around only 1,350 kilograms (2976.24 lb), high-torque power units driving the rear wheels guarantee commensurate road performance. Two electric motors with a combined output of 150 kW (204 hp) and 2,650 Nm (1954.54 lb-ft) accelerate the coupe with ASF-design aluminum body from 0 to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in just 5.9 seconds. The Audi e-tron Concept accomplishes the sprint from 60 to 120 km/h (37.28 – 74.56 mph) in a mere 5.1 seconds.
