Geely unveiled at Beijing the IG concept, which anticipates a future low-cost model, a rival to Tata Nano. It will cost starting with $2200 and will be superior by the Indian model, in terms of quality.

Geely unveiled at the Auto Show in Beijing, ended at late last month, a concept named IG, which apparently did not announce anything special. The Chinese, who recently bought Volvo, promise a revolutionary vehicle, intending to overthrow the record set by Tata Nano.

More specifically, Geely wants to give birth to the world cheapest model, the serial version of the IG concept followed to cost somewhere between $2,200 and $3,000. Geely promises an unbeatable price but also a better execution quality than Indian rival, and also superior materials.

What the Chinese don’t will offer is enough space in the back seat, its overall size is somewhat reduced: a wheelbase and a length larger with only 3.9 inches, respectively 7.2 inches, than those from Toyota iQ. The general design will be one more conservative, the vertical opening doors of the IG concept(Intelligent Geely)will disappear completely.

Under the hood will find a 1.0-liter gas engine, capable to develop 70 HP and 69 lb-ft of torque. The resources will be sent to the front axle through by a CVT gearbox.

For the U.S.A and Europe market, Geely will probably develop an electric version, expected between 2014 and 2015, ready to develop 80 HP and 133 lb-ft, with an autonomy of at least 93 miles. The IG concept let to understand that the electric version of the series will have solar panels on the roof, on the hood and on the dashboard, to recharge the batteries and extend the autonomy.

Geely sell cars in Russia and Europe and plans to expand the distribution network until 2012, the year when will launch the new low-cost model.
