“F-Cell’, Mercedes-Benz’s new hydrogen car to arrive in early 2010
Hot trivia on the German manufacture: Mercedes-Benz has its origins in Karl Benz’s creation of the first gasoline-powered automobile in January 1886. Nowadays, Mercedes still keeps it’s innovative touch and brings us an environmental friendly B-class inspired hydrogen fuel cell car.
More than just future glimpses, this project is due to start a small-scale serious of production, around 200 vehicles, which are planned to hit the States and part of Europe in the beginning of next year.
This looks like a great Green car, it will use a uses a 100 kW electric motor that gives the Mercedes-Benz F-cell a more-than-sufficient 214 lb-ft of torque. The F-Cell is intended to give the same feel as a usual 2.0-liter gas-powered automobile (the run to 60 will take under 11 seconds).
That makes it 134 horsepower for this hydrogen-eating Mercedes. Not too bad, don’t you think? Range is around 250 miles / 402 km, though real testing will probably make a little difference. This improvement in range is due in part to the B-Class’s greater space for holding tanks of compressed hydrogen, higher storage pressure, as well as fuel cell technology advances. Still, we trust Germans to know their math, so that might actually be accurate enough. How long would you spend at the station for refill with hydrogen? Under 3 minutes, which in some cases can be shorter than gas actually.
Mercedes-Benz designed (or are designing ?) the F-Cell to be a latest-hourt pack of green technology, so it also features a 1.4 kWh lithium ion battery that recaptures energy normally lost to braking. And yes, that can be a rather huge amount of electricity, which can really make a difference depending of where and how you drive.
